Poles in Uncle Sam's Army
Dziennik Związkowy, Apr. 7, 1917
According to statistics of the Recruiting Bureau, of the eight hundred Chicago volunteers who enlisted in the army in March, one hundred and twenty-five were Poles, who were either born here or who came to this country from Europe. They are all citizens of this country and all have expressed their willingness to fight the German oppressors.
Captain Kennedy says that many Poles who volunteer cannot be accepted because they don't know English. Every applicant must know how to read and write English.
