Foreign Language Press Survey

[Skandinaven Is Only Norwegian Newspaper in Chicago] (Summary)

Revyen, May 15, 1897

The editor tells us that twelve to thirteen years ago Chicago had five Norwegian newspapers. Now the only one left is Skandinaven. "Dennye Tid" is dead, "Vort Land" has disappeared, "Amerika" is printed in Madison, Wis., which is the cemetery of the Norwegian press, and "Norden" is now printed in Minneapolis.

(This belongs perhaps mostly under the Norwegian group, but there has always been a sharp competition between the Danish and the Norwegian press in Chicago, as the Danish and Norwegian languages are so much alike in print they are easily read by people of both nations.)
