Skandinaven, May 18, 1883
The "Sand Sacker," built by a Lane, Carl Lobnitz, arrived at the Panama Canal, and was found to be one of the best dredges at the Canal. L. R. Caspersen, the Marine Superintendent, also a well-known Dane, has arrived at Colon.
The dredge is the largest in use, being 170 feet long, 26 feet Wide, with a 12 foot draught. To date, there are about five hunded Danes employed at the Canal, most of them from Chicago. The majority are technicians and engineers.
