The Chicago Foreign Language Press Survey was published in 1942 by the Chicago Public Library Omnibus Project of the Works Projects Administration of Illinois. The purpose of the project was to translate and classify selected news articles that appeared in the foreign language press from 1855 to 1938. The project consists of 120,000 typewritten pages translated from newspapers of 22 different foreign language communities of Chicago.
Mr. Gustave Drassler, who had a shop on North Clark Street, and his whole family died in the flames; likewise his older brother, who used to carry dispatches at night to the Illinois Staats-Zeitung, and his niece, Miss Richter, who was a member of the Germania Female Choir. Mr. Henry Lamparter lost his wife, Mrs. Louisa Thielemann whose house burnt down two years ago, and who, only a few days ago, started, at great personal sacrifice, a German theatre on the North Side, has lost everything, and now faces the future more bewildered than ever. The maid of Mrs. Thielemann, and the maid of her neighbour, Mr. Barthold Meyer, Ontario Street, lost their lives in the fire. Brother Moody has not been able to abstain from inviting the people in to pray. Mr. Hermann Raster has found a domicile with his colleague, Mr. T. Konig of the "Union", 386 W. Taylor Street. Ernestine Schmidt is being sought by her husband, Christian Schmidt, in Ditmars' Pharmacy. Mr. Henry Hochbaum and L. and R. Berlitzheimer whose shops on the North Side were burned, have, with their characteristic energy, already reopened their shops on Milwaukee Avenue. Henry Schollkopf, Groceries; Bauer and Company, Music Instruments; Gale & Blocki; Knauer 2Brothers and many other Germans are feverishly busy with the arrangement of their new shops. The Germans don't take second place after the Americans as to energy. The Thursday meeting in the Vorwarts Turnhalle could not take place, because the Turn Hall is being used as a hospital. Mr. Wilhelm Levy, formerly of the Staats-Zeitung, is now a special policeman. Mrs. Julia Butz, fortunately, is well, so that the contrary rumors dissolve into naught.

The 17th of May, the Norwegian day of Liberty was celebrated by several Norwegian societies. The weather was as though made to order. "Nora-Lodge" celebrated in the Orpheus Hall; Norwegian Dramatic Lodge celebrated in Turner Hall; and the Norwegian Society in its own Hall.
All members had invited non-members to participate in their celebration. In Nora Lodge had a special celebration. Norwegian ladies presented the Lodge with a beautiful banner. Mr. Jacob Johnson gave the banner to the Lodge and made a very nice speach in English. Mr. Hans Anderson thanked the ladies in behalf of the Lodge. In the Norwegian Dramatic Club a Norwegian play was presented "Tordenskjold in Dynekilen" which was well staged and later a dance was held which lasted until morning.

A gala presentation will be given next Wednesday in the North Side Turner Hall, for the benefit of the free German American Dispensary.
For a long time, it has been the hope of German physicians that it would be possible some time. to build a German Hospital. It was a frequent experience of theirs, that poor Germans, unacquainted with the English language, either could not enter hospitals or were unable to describe to the doctors the nature of their ailments.
Without money nothing can be accomplished. For that reason a gala presentation of the play "The Painter" will be given next Wednesday. Such eminent actors as Miss Wolff, Mrs. Claussen, Mr. Donald, Mr. Mayer, and Mr. Wolkenstein, will take part in the play.

On behalf of the Scandinavian people, I beg to inform you, that the editor of Scandinaven or its aesthetic theatre and literary importer, make fools of the public, the actors, and the playrights. A short time ago there was an announcement regarding A.B.C. Scandinaven made it a farce by saying how deep and clever the author of the A.B.C. was to write such a wonderful book. But before Christmas a stage show was played. It's name was Newlywed, by "Bjornson"; Scandinavian critics stated that he saw the same show at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, but that there was no comparison; the Chicago amateurs were far above the Royal theatre. Chicago actors played in a much more refined and delicate style, etc. That is the kind of criticism Scandinaven dares print when it is well-known, too, that the Chicago actors are only amateurs, trying to bring a little joy to their countrymen in Chicago, That is the thanks Scandinaven is giving them, comparing them with star professional actors.

The German Literary Association of the Chicago Atheneum gave a presentation yesterday in its building of "The Diplomat", by Scribe and Delavigne. The actors were Americans who had taken lessons in German. In a short time they have made much progress. Although their pronunciation betrayed several of them, their fluent expression was excellent. Mr. Ullmann and Miss Bushnell deserve special praise. This is the first attempt made by Americans and the results were most satisfactory. Special recognition is due to Mr. Groh, teacher of the German language who gave the impetus to this presentation.
